How to Fix a Flat Tire on Your Bike

Flat tires are an inevitable part of cycling. The good news? Fixing one is a straightforward skill that every cyclist should know. Whether you're 10 miles from home on a trail or in your garage, this step-by-step guide will walk you through changing or patching a tube quickly and confidently.

What You'll Need

  • Spare inner tube (correct size for your wheel)
  • Tire levers (2–3 plastic levers)
  • Mini pump or CO₂ inflator
  • Patch kit (optional, for emergencies)
  • Gloves (optional but helpful)

Step 1: Remove the Wheel

First, get the flat wheel off the bike.

  • Rear wheel: Shift to the smallest sprocket (easiest gear) before removing. This makes reinstallation much simpler.
  • Open the quick-release skewer or loosen the thru-axle (depending on your bike).
  • For rear wheels, gently pull back the derailleur to free the chain from the cassette as you slide the wheel out.

Step 2: Deflate and Remove the Tire

  1. Let any remaining air out of the tube by pressing the valve core (Presta valves need to be unscrewed first).
  2. Insert a tire lever under the tire bead (the edge of the tire that seats against the rim) and hook it onto a spoke.
  3. Insert a second lever a few inches away and work it around the rim to pop one side of the tire bead off.
  4. Once one side is off, pull the inner tube out completely.

Step 3: Find the Cause of the Flat

Before installing a new tube, always find what caused the puncture — otherwise you'll flat again immediately.

  • Run your fingers carefully around the inside of the tire, feeling for glass, thorns, staples, or sharp debris.
  • Check the rim tape to ensure it's covering all spoke holes properly.
  • Inflate the old tube slightly and listen/feel for the leak to help identify the puncture location.

Step 4: Install the New Tube

  1. Add a small amount of air to the new tube — just enough to give it shape. This prevents pinching.
  2. Insert the valve stem through the valve hole in the rim.
  3. Work the tube around the inside of the tire, seating it evenly.
  4. Starting at the valve, use your thumbs to push the tire bead back onto the rim. Work both hands away from the valve in opposite directions.
  5. For the last section (usually opposite the valve), use your thumbs to push the final bead over the rim edge. Avoid using tire levers here if possible — they can pinch the new tube.

Step 5: Check the Tire Seating

Before inflating fully, visually check all the way around both sides of the tire to make sure the bead is evenly seated and the tube isn't pinched or bulging out anywhere. A poorly seated tire can blow off the rim dangerously at high pressure.

Step 6: Inflate and Reinstall

  1. Inflate to the recommended PSI printed on the tire sidewall. Start at the lower end of the range for comfort; higher for speed on smooth roads.
  2. Reinstall the wheel, tightening the quick release or thru-axle securely.
  3. For the rear wheel, guide the chain back onto the smallest sprocket as you seat the wheel.
  4. Give the wheel a spin and squeeze the brakes to confirm everything is aligned properly.
